Lewisham Thunder 64 vs Woking Blachawks 51
Following the previous weekend’s defeat to Haringey Angels the U16 Girls were looking to bounce back swiftly but knew this would be a tough ask having lost, by 11 points,to a well drilled Woking Blackhawks away from home earlier in the season. Since then the team’s line-up has been added to and the players development has progressed.
From the opening tip Woking worked to build up a 6 point lead holding Lewisham scoreless for 3 minutes before the home team finally waking up, rattling in 12 unanswered points and then holding a lead they were not to relinquish for the remainder of the match. Woking drilled a pair of treys split by 3 from the line from Lewisham who went in 3 up at the close of the first quarter.
Lewisham controlled the opening 5 minutes of the second quarter stretching the lead to 10 as Woking managed only one solitary point from the foul line. The closing 5 minutes saw Woking look a lot more lively as they pulled back within 4 before the buzzer took the players in for the half time break.
This would turn out to be a game of two halves. The seemingly lackadaisical approach to the first two quarters from Lewisham had resulted in missed opportunities on the break and from the charity stripe. Those taken, the game would have been over but there was still plenty of work to do. The players recognised this and ramped up the defence accordingly dominating the boards, blocking shots and forcing turnovers. Jenelle Grant and Latisha Powell pulled down rebounds and generally make life very uncomfortable in the paint for the Woking players. That coupled with increased vigour on the wings pressurised the Woking shooters who struggled to hit from outside, releasing the speedy Thunder guards on the break. Woking did not cope well and the foul quota began to rise. Despite this, although Lewisham won the third quarter, the lead only stretched by a point as Woking refused to roll over.
The fourth began with Grant hitting 3 from 4 from the line going on to score 11 of her season high 32 points in that quarter. Woking, now in foul trouble, tried to respond, pulling back to 5 down but this only rejuvenated the Thunder players. The lead began to stretch and there was no way back as the home team closed out a 13 point victory.
A good team performance, which would have been better, had the finishing close to the basket been more polished. Saying that, there is without doubt, still more to come from this group of players who are developing and improving with every game
