Lewisham Community Sports Coach and former LA Laker, Steve Bucknall, launched Lewisham Thunder on December 2006 at Forest Hill School’s new community sports centre.
The Club exists for the benefit of young players who wish to develop their skills in the sport of basketball, and to promote interest in the sport in the local area.
Lewisham Thunder provides players with technical training in addition to teaching the values of teamwork, responsibility and self discipline.
It will also enable members to participate in basketball, both competitively and socially.
We aim to cater for all abilities.
Our competitive framework consists of Fixtures mainly in and around London and the home counties area, with some away games possibly being on the South Coast or East Anglia. We won’t know exact venues until we receive the fixtures. National League is a big commitment and players who wish to play at this level would need to attend training regularly and be available for games. It will also require a financial commitment from players as National League incurs much higher costs to cover the following:
- Entry fees and registrations
- Officials expenses for games
- Court hire and expenses for training and home matches
- Kit
- Travel expenses
Players who wish to be considered for the teams would need to be full members of the club.
The Club begins training full in September each year
Travel: Car parking is available in the front of the Sport Hall. Forest Hill Community Centre is located in between the London Borough of Lewisham districts of Forest Hill and Sydenham. The London Buses route 75 runs outside the school entrance which is 2 mins walk from the Gym. Nearest stations within working distance are Sydenham and Forest Hill Stations.
Steve Bullock, Mayor of Lewisham, said:
“Steve Bucknall is doing a great job in Lewisham – coaching young people and acting as role model in the community. I am excited about the launch of Lewisham Thunder, it should be a really strong side considering Steve’s skill as a coach and the amount of talented young players there are in the borough.”
