On their longest road trip so far the girls were looking to avenge a 2 point loss at home in the opening fixture of their National League Campaign.  The players arrived tired and took a while to stretch their legs before heading to get changed.  With Thunder colours donned the players came out with a hardened look about them.  They had been awaiting this rematch and believed they had gifted Solent their win back in October.

Early exchanges were full of intensity and buckets were traded throughout the first quarter with neither team getting ahead by more than a couple before being reined in.  The referees looked to make their mark calling 45 fouls in the game resulting in 21, of the 59, free throws being shot in the first 10 minutes.  The second quarter continued as the first with all the points in the first 4 minutes coming from the line before Lewisham started to pull out and hold on to a lead on the back of mean team defence and stellar rebounding from Latisha Powell.

Solent went into the break 5 down at 31:26 but came out fired up as Lewisham lapsed and gave up 11 straight points in 5 minutes to trail 37:31. With Jenelle Grant now ably supporting Powell under the boards and beginning to find her offensive touch along with Stephanie Narraine and Ami Elizee, Thunder replied with a straight 7 of their own to regain the lead and   pull away to head into the last quarter up 39:43 with the team beginning to lock down defensively.

Everyone knows that this teams plays to the last second of the last minute of every game and the Thunder Girls were determined to return home with a notch in the W column.  Chasing down every loose ball and harrying every shot Solent took, they gave up only 8 points in the final quarter and delivered 14 of their own, stretching the lead to 10 as they ran out winners of a hard fought and at times very physical confrontation.  They delivered a strong team performance with every player making a contribution at both ends of the floor.  The girls were resilient and showed outstanding team ethic delighting their coaches and three travelling supporters.  You three know who you are and you deserve recognition for the constant encouragement and direction you offer the players game after game. The Under 16 Girls played their part in a spectacular win day for the Lewisham Thunder Junior Teams as all five junior teams racked up wins.  The day schedule started early with the Under 12’s winning their away fixture (42-22) before returning home to see four home wins by the Boy’s Under 14  (88-46) in their 12.00 noon fixture, the Under16 Girls in their 14.00 her game, then the Under 16 Boy’s (91-40) and Under 18’s men (66-58) respectively in their 16.00 hr and 18.00 hr fixtures.  That with a round of birthday celebrations for Club Secretary, Nikki Sealy made for a great day.

The Under 16 Girls bolstered after the Christmas break by the return to the line up of Jenelle Grant after an 8 month lay off due to injury played well in their first fixture post-break game travelled to Newham Youngbloods and lost a game that was tighter than the 54-33 suggested.  A very poor second quarter proved to be the team’s undoing and despite winning the third and running neck and neck in the fourth the lead was just to great to break down.  The  Girls continue to show outstanding resilience and much comment has been made of their ability to play hard to the last second of the last minute of every game they have played.  That ability, the coaching staff are certain, will stand them in good stead when they come to close out tight games against the teams jostling with them for places in the middle of the league table.

The Team was hoping that a home game against Uxbridge College Emperors would be the first home win of the season. Certainly something exciting looked on the cards following a focussed warm-up.

A score off the opening ti,p from a set play,seemed set the tone and a burst of 10 unanswered points in the middle of the first quarter effectively put the game away  as Uxbridge struggled to cope with the Thunder defence  that was not in the mood to give up points. The defence was a springboard for the offense with Latisha Powell, Charlotte Criello and Ami Elizee dominating the defensive boards  releasing Karen Martinez and Stephanie Narraine  on the break for layups. As Uxbridge struggled to cope Thunder stretched the lead to come in up 36 -12 at the half with all the home players getting a run. Uxbridge scoring the opening six points of the  third quarter only served to galvanise  Lewsiham who then hit 20 points without reply as they held the visitors scoreless for the remainder of the quarter.  If the third quarter wa s dominated on offence by Martinez who hit 10 of her game high 22 in the quarter,  Jenelle Grant owned the fourth as she racked up 10 points in a four minute burst of activity.   All around the girls  played well with everyone contributing as they put together their best defensive and offensive performances to date.

Next weekend sees the team travel to Solent in the return match of the opening game of the season which Lewisham lost by 2 points on the last free throws of the game.  The team has moved on a developed considerably since then and are hopeful of reversing that scoreline.

We are pleased to announce the Player of the Year for 2011:

Playing in U18-Men team is Rowell Graham of Lewisham Thunder Basketball Club.

This award is in recognition of an outstanding and consistent leadership, teamwork and application based on performances on court, off court, in training and in competition.

Rowell was not in the starting five for the U18 Men, but still managed to rack up 8.0 points and 6.1 rebounds per game. He was the team’s most efficient scorer shooting at 59.5%. He posted double figure points twice and was in the top 10 in the tournament in blocked shots.

“Rowell is a physically talented athlete who has only been playing organised basketball for two years. He has progressed from street ball to international level through his determination and drive to become the best! He has shown leadership on the floor and was the best England player at the recent European Championship.”
